Google+…

…is awfully shiny. We’ll see if it has staying power, but at the moment, it seems to fall into that nice little slot between Twitter and blogging–more than 140 characters, images, etc, suitable for “Look at this shiny object!” but not quite a blog post with bells and whistles. And the circles thing is pretty nifty.

I would be happy with it destroying Facebook, but that is partly because I cannot hear an interview with Facebook’s founder without wishing unspecified doom upon him, and perhaps hives.

Yes! This!! I thought I was the only one!

I must +1 this. (Sorry, I've got a sickness that way).

I finally joined FB last week, but I feel vaguely dirty for doing so. And I definitely do not trust the founder.

I don't often do topical comics, but I summed up my thoughts on G+ thusly.

There's some rumbling about how they do not get online pseuds/privacy issues and have been deleting accounts. Meh. I have enough trouble keeping up with lj and dw.

Yeah. On the other hand, it's supposed to be a strictly limited field trial to work some of the kinks out, and it looks like at least some of those complaints are being addressed.

(Such as 'other' now being an alternative for male/female.)

Just about the ONLY reason I have a FB account... is to play Echo Bazaar.

And I have LJ to post without using my real name. I'm good.

Wouldn't Twitter be a better sign-in for EB? That's assuming you have been found on FB by friends who tag you in photos and incessantly begs for Farmville help...

I could not possibly agree more. Maybe hives and boils? *hopeful*

Hives, boils AND carbuncles? *even more hopeful*

Added you (my real name is Jennifer Campbell-Smith). I like Google+ too because of the lack of useless crap, but I fear FB may be too well established and be too appealing with its games to die.

I'd be willing to bet that once Google+ gets out of its limited rollout that games will soon appear.

I don't yet have Google+. I'm not hurrying to get it; not because I don't want it (I think it sounds nifty), but because I don't want to get trampled by the rush or the begging, pleading, and groveling to join. ;-)

Just remember that following isn't entirely the same as friending, so you don't have to add back strangers that follow you.

*nod* I'm trying to figure out if a "Fans" circle is worthwhile. There are likely to be a lot of them, all ego aside, and maybe just leaving stuff for fandom 'public' is a better notion due to sheer unwieldiness, but I'd kinda like to keep a circle for people I sorta know on LJ, say. (My notion of "public" is more "Dragonbreath and other totally unobjectionable content.")

I suspect these are the sorts of kinks that will work themselves out over time.

I can't quite understand or figure out why people hate Facebook.

Um... I suppose I really should have asked before I just went and did it, but are you okay with people adding you on Google+? Like to the their "Really Awesome People" circle (or just to the built-in "Following" circle)?

Given that there's no way to stop someone adding you to a circle (much as there's no way to stop someone friending you on LJ or following you on Twitter)?

I wanted to participate in a whitehouse event yesterday about government websites and the only way to actually get my comments up was to post them on facebook. Which of course meant giving Zuckerman money. And yes, I pointed out the unfairness of that, since I couldn't choose a less pernicious social network to do the same thing.

I'm only there because my mom is. And she's there to see pictures of her grandchildren. :P

The NY state penal system has over 15 choices on gender. [I think it's over 20, but I don't really remember.] My sister learned this in a class on Oracle, as an example of variables that have more than two values [whatever they're called].

[blink]

I have to know. What are the choices?

[fascinated]

[edited: Ack! blink tags! I keep getting messed up switching between vbulletin and html]

Google + is just Buzz with a new name, right?

Not exactly? It's...Buzz is more akin to trying to be Twitter, whereas Google+ is Facebook without all the games and adds and with better filtering.

Right now I'm with XKCD in that I feel the main thing to recommend it is my family isn't on it. ;)

I'm not very fond of either Twitter or Facebook, so here's hoping G+ latches on. It feels like a slicker LiveJournal which is a-okay with me- I prefer reading content people put thought into and 140 characters is rarely enough.
