What does it mean? Why does Man-Ape need those three books?
I figure that either it's a lame reason--the publisher of those three editions included a secret code on page #178 that, deciphered, will point the way to the Secret Atomic Death Chicken Ray--or a good reason--reading epic tales of man vs. nature (particularly Melville) will allow Man-Ape to reconcile his bestial and human natures, his inner Ahab and white whale, if you will, and thus, as a fully actualized primate with a gun, he can conquer the earth forever!
It's going to gnaw at me.
