Awwwww yeah!

Annnnnd the NWF said “Um. Right. Toxic birdseed, you say? Well, never mind then.”

Now, realistically, I’ll bet you dollars to daffodil bulbs that what REALLY happened is that the internet got really mad at the NWF and the NWF said “Oh dear, didn’t think you’d notice…” did the math of PR outrage, and took this as an excuse to bow out before the hate mail reached epic proportions. There’s no way they didn’t know this was coming, particularly since a major focus of the NWF’s efforts with Scotts was the birdseed thing, and I’m very sure that Scotts got them on board specifically as damage control, because “Scotts Sells Toxic Birdseed” as a headline is only slightly better than “Scotts Products Made Of Puppies” or “Scotts CEO Says (Your Beloved Regional Cuisine Here) Tastes Like Sheep-turds.”

However, any excuse is a good excuse in cases like this, and however annoyed we may be that the NWF got to that stage, it behooves us to praise them for having pulled back. (You have to praise people for doing the right thing just as much as you yell at them for the wrong thing—otherwise you’re just yelling and people eventually buy earplugs.)

Am I happy they were willing to partner in the first place? No. Have I lost a lot of faith in the NWF? You betcha. Would I love the NWF to come out and start cataloging all the bad thing Scotts has done and vow to stop them? I would love that more than pie.

But that’s clearly not gonna happen, and at the end of the day, a bunch of people yelling on the internet made the NWF pull out of the partnership. And in my book that’s a win.

Good(ish) Scott's. Would Scotty like a Cookie?

The NWF has always struck me as being out to make money, not much else.

One could only wish it worked that way more often.
Alas, no.

An albino ruby-throated hummingbird. Very pretty.

Also Completely OT

Icon love---what a kissable puppy! Awww, just look at those flopsy ears . . .

*snorgles hound dawg puppy*

That's Bridget, my Elderly Basset, from a few years ago. She is now 14, and her buddy Basset, Gromit, passed away a bit over a year ago. I'm a Basset fanatic and will most likely have another pair when she passes, but for now she is enjoying being an only dog and we are spoiling her as much as we can.

Oooh, pretty!

It might go nicely with the Nightgaunt Romance... :P

By the way, from a news article on the subject:
"This week, Scotts is hosting an event in New Orleans about "saving the songbird" --- to help promote their line of bird seed."

Help protect the lives of these threatened birds... by feeding them "high-quality" Scotts® Songbird Selections® Nutrithrive™

Also, is anyone else envisioning the BP CEO on South Park? But whatever- I guess I'll take this as a win, regardless.

Scott is promoting biodiversity by feeding birds mutagens!

Ursula, I love following your blog, but it is really difficult to read with the new coloring.

Dang, I had to upgrade owing to personal idiocy, and I thought this was one of the more readable ones. What's specifically making it difficult?

I think it's the red link text, I like white on dark text myself, but dark red link text can be hard to read.

I just want someone like NWF or audobon or whatever to send me more free address labels in an attempt to get a donation. I'm out of address labels, darn it!

NNNGH. THIS. I keep getting unbelievably florid donation requests full of address labels, pics of sad-eyed children and Woeful Tales from a very woeful Save-The-Poor-Destitute-Indians group that, after a little research, turns out to be a redflagged organization that refuses to divulge their CEO's income or distribution percentages. They include a Catholic saint in their name, so they're using the church angle in their refusal. But, you know, they manage to do a VERY expensive printing package, lots of gilt and photography... This sort of thing drives me freaking nuts. They don't even use 'Native Americans' or 'First Nations' in their terminology-- it's 'American Indians'. **slow burn** Sorry, just got another one, hence the rant. Will stop now! (/graahrr)

It's times like this I'm honestly glad the internet exists. It's nice to know it can in fact be used for good.

I always make it a point to praise someone when they actually undo some dumb thing they did. It's not as good as swinging the other way, but it still takes a lot to say "Oh, we guess that WAS a bad idea, sorry" instead of just yelling back. They may not fill the hole back in, but at least they climbed out of it instead of digging deeper.

Definitely. Positive reinforcement for the corporate world. ;p
I suspect NWF also saw how much money they were potentially going to lose over this and said "Screw Scott!"

Probably. But hey, if the money sends a message, in this case it can be a thank-you note.

(I am so full of metaphors today! SEND HELP.)

I got an e-mail back from them today, telling me this. I hope they've learned from the debacle, but I won't hold my breath.
