Just to say…

I’m always scared to post things like this for fear I’ll horribly mangle it and make things worse. Nevertheless, I’ll try, and if I screw it up, I’ll apologize and take my lumps, because this is the sort of thing that doesn’t go without saying any more.

I have some readers and fans who identify as Muslim. Maybe not a huge majority, but I know there’s at least a couple–and there may be a lot more than I know about, because it’s simply never come up. (Why would it? We talk about crawfish and wombats and eating lousy food.)

You sure don’t need me to tell you that there’s horrible crap that gets said on the internet at times like this. The very best of humanity is what made people run toward explosions a week ago—the internet and a lot of our senators aim a lot lower. It goes on all the damn time, but it’s going to be really bad for the next little while.

I’ve avoided talking about all the crap going on in this space because A) I know nothing more than anybody else, have no insights, and don’t presume to be an expert, and B) have nothing to say that’s not trite or repetitive, and if you’re here, odds are good you’re looking to talk about something else.

But I just want to say, since we’re gonna hear some vile, vile shit coming out of people’s mouths in the near future–guys, you can be in my life-raft, any time. We’ll figure out the short wave radio together and take turns fishing with hooks made out of toenail clippings, or whatever the hell it is people do when they’re lost at sea.

You’re not a them. You’re part of my us. I’m glad you’re here.

(Note: We’re all kinda raw, so be very nice to each other in the comments. If Mister Rogers would not say it, you should probably think twice before posting. And if anybody start offensive pontificating, I will not hesitate to ban them so hard that their Facebook account will feel it.)

Can I saw how much I love this line?

*grin* Use it with my blessing.

This post gives me feel-good feels.

Me too. Thanks, Ursula, and thanks, all decent fellow readers.

I offer my life raft to, with plenty of tea, kimchi and cat hair to spare. I'll even bring my books if everyone promises not to get them *too* wet.

I'll donate cookies and baked goods to the life raft party.

so much has been destroyed

I have to cast my lot with those
who, age after age, perversely,

with no extraordinary power,
reconstitute the world.”

Beautiful and perfect poem.

Yes, this. Thankyou for posting it.

Well said. I wish all those dealing with the fallout of this peace and love and grace.

Hear, hear!

Er, not that I've got a blog that I keep updated or has any meaningful number of followers ... but I do have one-third of a chocolate cake to share.

I have trader joes' chocolate mini bundt cakes too! Chocolate cake all around, for those who want it!

My granddad was a ham radio genius, I'm sure there's a bunch of gear remaining in his garage we could use.

Which is to say that I'm fully on board with this rafting thing. Well put, well put indeed.

My base assumption is that just about any group you care to name is mostly made up of decent folks who are just trying to get on with their lives, and that similarly any group can turn up the occasional nutcase that makes the decent people go and quietly bang their heads against the wall.

Oooh, ooh, a challenge!

I pick "occasional nutcases" as the counter-example group.

I'm all in. Thanks for a message like this today...I'll bake cupcakes and brownies for all who want them. :-)

Agree with this and all the posts above. What makes life living are the good, wonderful people in it. and the good, wonderful people who sometimes have bad days and post shitty stuff on the internet but are still good people trying to get on with their own lives and drama. and the not always so good, cranky people who still manage to do awesome, amazing things when push comes to shove. (hugs) to all.

This so much. I often feel like an alien because whatever it is that makes most people have these knee jerk reactions to certain groups just does not work that way in my head. the whole of the gender thing and race thing and religion what have you whatever thing just never worked that way in my head. I can sorta gronk it. I have on occasion used hurtful words at people. but honestly to me people are people. Rashid is Rashid. Susan is Susan. Lothar of the Hill people is Lothar.. i know so many people. and they are all different. I remember even long ago in my ancient fundy days they asked us kids what heaven would be like and every single kid said something different. every single one. they of course corrected us on what heaven would be like but i remember everyone describing their heaven and the looks of bliss on their faces. that is what i remember. we were all in one group. supposedly that should have made us all One Type of person. but everyone had a different idea of heaven. when i talked to some of the other adults even though they physically described the same place they talked about differing aspects of it. what would be wonderful to them.

So basically i am saying that just because people go to the same small church. or same small club or whatever should not reflect on the entire populace of that group. each individual beyond the shared whatever is also a completely independent person. some people are crazy and some people are heros and most people are wonderful.

so yeah if you guys need high ground to get out of the life raft on i live on a pretty big hill. and you are all welcome here.

You have the most fantastic way with words. Bravo.
