Oddity

So I had this dream—most of it was the usual nonsensical twaddle about strange mythic beings in an abandoned city that vaguely resembled a dungeon crawl—but at the end, I wound up at a jewelry stall looking at necklaces.

There was one made of black basalt beads and silver spacers that I really liked, but it had one of those chiming pendants on it that drive me crazy—I feel like a belled cat—so I asked to switch out the pendant. The woman running the stall began pulling out all of these pendants in white and silver, carved like animals, and some of them came to life and ran away. We were debating the merits of an overly large silver fish when I saw a tail sticking out from a crack in the wall and pulled out a little alabaster mouse.

It curled up in my hands and I sang to it—and this is how you know it’s a dream, because I don’t sing unless I’m drunk or alone in the car—

Go to sleep
Go to sleep
Go to sleep
little mousie

Go to sleep
Fare thee well
you were always
just a mousie.

And it went to sleep, and then it was just a little carving of a mouse, and I said “I’ll take this one.”

And then I woke up and it was after ten and I had overslept, probably because of the shot of tequila I had last night when we discovered that my upcoming book tour has had some scheduling snafus. But it was still nifty.

Aaaand I've been playing with jewelry making and now want a little curled up mousie pendant.

make one out of sculpy clay?

Seriously considering it.

Also... your Avatar.... *squeeeee* I loved that movie as a kid and he was my favorite character and that just brought back so many good feels.

The word that doesn't belong in there is 'usual'. At least I suspect it doesn't belong there for most people. Your dreams seem a lot more entertaining than most people's.

(Which isn't really a surprise, to be honest.)

I'm thoroughly grateful that this also counts as "the usual" for me. Strange dreams are far more entertaining to remember.

Can't spend all the time dungeon crawling. It's good to stop and relax and check out the jewelry!

Presumably something like you are scheduled to be at three different schools, fifteen miles apart, all within 5 minutes of each other? Also you are expected to speak loudly enough to be heard by all 100 children in the school cafeteria/gym/auditorium without sound equipment, because what do you think this is, the Ritz? Oh, and sign these 1500 books... Oh wait, that's us. :)

The last time I had a dream with memorable lyrics it was in fact part of an entire stage musical - if a slightly disturbing one choreographed by Matthew Bourne and Cirque Du Soliel - and the lyrics, sung by the very abused hero in his time of isolated loneliness, went:

When I die
This world like traffic conductors
Will take me away
And that will be all.

When I die
This world like traffic conductors
A truck to clean up the dust
And that will be all

Dreams are weird, right?

I would like to see this musical!

Well, here's the rest of the dream, if you're interested. http://hypotheticalwoman.tumblr.com/post/37441283005/dream-record-1
(Incidentally the captain looked a lot like The Jon from Steam Powered Giraffe. I do not think he would be comfortable knowing this.)

I like your little mousie. A lot. It sounds like a netsuke to me.

It does, doesn't it? Perhaps in white jade? Or really good porcelain?

Are drawings of this little mouse carving going to show up?

I want a necklace with a pendant of a mouse that wakes up and goes to sleep, and I don't even wear jewelry.

At least you weren't sleep singing. Glad to know I wasn't the only one having odd dreams last night. I love the idea of animate jewellery.

my monster could probably make this, all out of polymer clay (except for the silver)...

Upcoming book tour? If you make it up to the Boston area, I would love to see if you can come visit NESFA (New England Science Fiction Association) and say hi, and feed you dinner or whatever.

I don't know how to convey how affecting I found your dream-summary. I really don't. You were always just a mousie, and I can't even. Shit.

It kinda broke me a little too. I keep singing it today in the car.

It's the 'just' and the past tense, and the feeling that you aren't comforting the mousie or claiming it in any beneficient way. It's not even your mousie. You are not its person.

I want to find your dream mousie and give it something more than the dream did.

You have the best dreams. Must be all the neat stuff you have tucked into your brain!

I happen to make beaded jewelry....and now I'm really tempted to look for a good little mouse pendant.
