Like A Real Author With Pants

Soooo….let’s just sweep the chaos of the last twenty-four hours aside for the moment…

Hi, internet! I have a new novella out! It is live and there are no more horrifying errors with chapter duplication! You should read it!

On Smashwords

On Amazon

It will propagate out to other sites when Smashwords gets around to it, so Nook, Kobo, and (god willing) iBooks versions will be coming soon. (Watch this space! Or Twitter!) If you’re impatient, however, you can get an ePub version on Smashwords that will work just fine on an iPad. (Easiest way is to either buy it and e-mail it to yourself, or buy it using the iPad.)

Now, as to what the story is about…well, it’s about goblins. And Sings-to-Trees the elf. (Remember him? This takes place before the Elf/Orc thing, though.)

This is a small epic fantasy, if that makes any sense. It is fun. And because I am starting to think such things need warnings, this story will not force you into painful personal growth, it will not tear your heart out, it will not unmake you. These characters are hopefully people you’ll want to spend a few hours with and maybe come back to occasionally when the world is being unkind…that’s all.

There is nothing wrong with those other things and the world is better for them existing, but sometimes I just want a fun little book with goblins and kittens and elven veterinarians, so that’s what I wrote.

Thank you to various parties who jumped on the various bugs from yesterday–you were all gracious and awesome and helpful. (And again, if you have downloaded a Kindle version before midnight, it may have the chapter bug–download the update, should be all good. Sorry for the inconvenience–I’m new to this!) As always, my readers are the coolest ever about being dragged along the Learning Curve with me.

I will post more about Horrifying Learning Experiences another day. Until then…well, hey, novella! And if it does well, and as the chaos of yesterday fades in memory, perhaps there will be more.

Thank you to everyone who bought a copy–you rock!

And–oh, yeah, I’m supposed to do this marketing thing (sorry, I’m bad at it.) If you have a review site and would like a review copy for the reviewing, shoot me an e-mail at ursulav (at) gmail.com with a link to the site and I will happily send you a free copy!

Is that everything? Am I doing this right?

ETA: Ah, right–two quick things! Kindle version on Amazon is arguably better than Kindle version on Smashwords, due to Smashwords Meatgrinder formatting, which hates things like “Table of Contents.” However, other than some slight centering offsets, it shouldn’t be too disruptive to read either version.

I arguably make about the same amount of money either way, so pick whichever one you like if that’s one of your concerns–if you don’t want to support The Evil River, I quite understand!

Congratulations!

Any chance of it coming out on pAper?

I've had a couple of parties express interest in maybe doing a hard-copy version somewhere in the future--it'll be a year or so, I imagine, but it seems likely we'll have something!

"this story will not force you into painful personal growth, it will not tear your heart out, it will not unmake you. "

YES these warnings are needed. Put one on the first page of THAT chapter of Digger. Oh Ed...

Yes, maybe just at at the start of the book(s).
You seem to be promising updated art and more comments with the collection. Since I have all 6 books, I would really need a good reason to buy the story again. But maybe that would do. That comment on how you saved a huge amount of work by realizing that trading paint receipes -- that one I saved when the comments were being erased.

Looking forward to the NOOK version!

The epub offered by Smashwords is in the format the Nook likes. You just have to load it on the device manually, rather than buy it from the Nook shop.

Personally, I'm a big fan of Calibre for managing e-reader content as I have both a Kobo and a Nook in the family, aan I find it more usable than the dedicated Nook or Kobo software.

Bought my copy through Amazon. I'll give it a read tonight. :)

Reading it at work because I'm a bad bad person. Great so far. The deer have just shown up...

I know there are folks who call Amazon the Evil Empire of Selling Stuff, but compared to the atrocities of Nike (the Evil Empire of Shoes), Disney (the Evil Empire of Entertainment), Exxon/Mobil (the Evil Empire of Oil ... and that's sayin' summat!), Microsoft (the Evil Empire of Software), and the United States government (the Evil Empire of Evil Empires), Amazon's are relatively tame. Not insignificant, but I choose to pick my battles elsewhere for the time being.

I use Amazon for quite a lot, but I know a fair number of people who really don't want to give them money for perfectly valid reasons, so I'll do my best to offer alternatives.

The whole POINT of being an author is being able to work with no pants on.

Kind of like Charlton Heston, now that I think of it.

That was delightful. Exactly as promised--a fun, light read with fun characters. Your world-building is so wonderful...god I love the deer.

And that's already a lot. I just want to mention I downloaded your story this morning to read on my phone, right before going to a small but stressful medical procedure (they wanted to put a needle the size of a VAMPIRE STAKE in my boob !) and reading the (mis) adventures of a veterinian elf and nine goblins really took the stress out the situation.
So thank for that. I still have half the book to finish, but with public transport, it'll be a few days affair!

It is a joy to see a person get a story out and immediately have an audience for it. It is a joy to see you make money. Yes, we all feel that you deserve it.

Is there any way to buy it if you don't have an ereader? because I would really love to read this thing, so much.

Kindle has a free app which allows you to read any of Amazon's ebooks on your computer or smartphone, if that helps. I've got a Nook, so most of the ebooks I buy are from B&N, but every now and then there's something not available there so I order it from Amazon. I've never had a problem reading any of them on my computer.

The Sings-To-Trees pov sections remind me of a sort of high-fantasy-world James Herriott, only with Pratchett's sense of humor.

Sings-To-Trees has totally dealt with creatures exhibiting 'flop-butt,' is all I have to say. :-> And at least his critters don't come with intimidating/twittering/lying owners ...

Wait, Sings-To-Trees is in this?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

(I didn't connect that casual mention of "elven veterinarians" with our long-suffering friend...)

Ursula, you should use your original S-T-T vignettes for advertising!

Purchased, will dl when I get home and devour tonite :)

SINGS TO TREES !

(only just started reading it yet)

That was terrific. Thank you! (Any chance of pictures of the stag?)

I have to ask. Since you say it's earned out already, does that include the cost of the liquor needed to get through the process?
