Smug Bird


I spent some recent time in New Orleans in a gallery that had a lot of work by the surrealist artist Daniel Merriam. I stared at it for a long time and thought "I wanna do...complicated...monochromatic...swirly...thingies..."

12 x 12 mixed media on board. They don't make enough shades of sea-green colored pencils, let me tell you.

While I'm not displeased with how it turned out for a first attempt, I keep thinking it should be about eight feet tall and then I could pack all KINDS of weird little thingies into the margins. I should probably stifle this urge. But the color scheme, jarring as it is, does kinda work for me, and I bought more sea green and maybe I should do another one.

For sale, will wind up at Anthrocon if nobody makes me an offer first.

I agree with everything, because I love this! Eight feet tall, whole armies of strangecuties in the margins, and as many shades of green as possible!

Oooh, I love the little bespectacled gargoyle-y dude.

Coincidentally, most interior walls are eight feet tall...

I can't afford to buy original art, but if you plan to offer prints I want to save my pennies and order one. That is such a soothing, compelling, DO WANT piece. *stares at it*

I like the color scheme, and don't find it jarring.

NICE! I particularly like the critter with the almond-shaped eyes all curled up and looking down at everything from the top center. That particular shade of green reminds me of early 1920's milk glass and Japanese cerulean ware; it's really pretty. **grins** And the house? Don't shoot me, but I *immediately* thought of Dr. Seuss. :D It's adorable.

I think it's all good as long as nobody has compared it to Labyrinth yet. :3

Do a triptych, two columns and an arch, to frame somebody's doorway, instead.

Oh man, I would take down the giant print over the fireplace in my green room to replace it with what I imagine that could look like. *dreamy eyes*

I am so tempted. It's magical and whimsical. If only I had room for the 8 foot version I would snap it up.

Lovely and slightly sinister at the same time. I don;t find the color scheme jarring, either....

this brings up a question... What is the largest piece of wall art you have come up with, thus far? I have all but one of your Animals-with-Hearts originals, and they're pretty small. I get the feeling most of your stuff is on the smaller side of the spectrum. Compared to, say, Normal Rockwell. His Four Freedoms paintings are HUGE. Like 9 feet tall. Certainly much larger than life.

30 x 40--or I guess, 60 x 40, since it was a diptych of two dancing rabbits.

I honestly don't do a lot of huge art because it's hard to store, expensive to ship, and I often can't get it on the scanner to do prints or anything. (I have an 18 x 36 wood-whale painting in the bathroom that I did that I just haven't had the brain cells to do a scan of...) So when I do a big painting, I often charge less than I should because it costs so much to ship and I feel bad they're paying for that, and I can't take it to cons unless I drive, so even though I kinda LOVE doing huge paintings sometimes, it just isn't very effective.

It's a shame really--I have the space, and I adore working big and loose, but I don't really have an easy way to get it to people, since every time I do a giant canvas like that, my postal guy has to actually BUILD A CRATE, and that's kinda nuts.
