Moments of Painful Geekiness

Okay, former Shadowrun players, hands where I can see them...

Do you ever find yourself wandering down the highways and byways of life, and see someone, and find yourself thinking involuntarily "Oh, lord, when the Awakening hits, you are SO going to be a dwarf." (Or elf, or orc, or troll or whatever...I always seem to meet future dwarves.)

I was at the grocery store today, looked over at the clerk, and thought "Oh, dear lord, get that man a dwarven manifesto.*"

I would be ashamed of my desperate geekiness, but I bet I'm not the only one...

*A relic of my long-running and increasingly lunatic Shadowrun campaign, whereby it was determined that in modern dwarvish society, dwarves exchange manifestos the way some people exchange business cards. Don't ask. Don't ask about the chest wigs either.

:::raises hand::: i swear to fucking god there is a soon-to-be Awakened troll at our starbucks.

Are there giants in Shadowrun? I think there is a giant at the office next to ours.

Your comment, Aepalizage, led to a conversation between my brother and I, which has been recorded here: http://aubri.livejournal.com/241256.html

Never played Shadowrun. Not a fan of modernized fantasy in general, though it does sound like one of the better implementations. So, I have no idea what the racial profiles might be... care to enlighten? :D

Weren't/aren't they making a Shadowrun computer game, with online play or something?

How can I not ask? I mean, really. This is me we're talking about here.

Shadowrun moment: I played a Decker, who had a deck in his head. He was friends with a dwarven Rigger, who thought it'd be a good idea to teach him to drive. Driving was explained as a video game, and if I managed to hit a Pregnant Nun on the Sidewalk, I won the game.

Good times.

I swear, my whole family is destined to Awaken as Dwarfs. All of us.

Been there, done that.

*quietly raises hand*

As far as we can tell, I'm destined to be a Human Urban Toxic Shaman, but a cheerful, upbeat one. Though I suppose it's possible I could get stuck being an Insect Shaman, for one of the lone-hunter species ...

Yes, yes it's very disturbing.

I once saw a toxic shaman get taken out by a rocket launcher because someone shouted 'Fuck him up!' and they did. There were no problems there.

Sounds like geeky fun to me. I've never played shadowrun, but have engaged in lots of "what so-and-so would be in this-or-that world".

Does everybody know one of those? I've gamed with one who we nicknamed "redcap" for his occasional eating of things that no human should be able to digest. and been introduced to another who was the very good friend of a roommate. and now I hear of a third...

*hand goes up* Yep.

...Are you sure I can't ask about the chest wigs? Because I'd really like to know.

Short, wide, with Thigh Muscles of Doom, redheaded and look like I should be waving an axe or broadsword? I'm either Boudicca or a dwarf :-)

Not.....exactly. However, when on layover in the Newark airport, I bought a cheesesteak from a man who really should have been a World of Warcraft goblin. He sounded unnervingly like the guy who runs the Zeppelin stop near Orgrimmar.

Maybe you should have suggested a change in career plans to the man? :p

Can't say much about Awakening predictions, but a good friend of mine keeps mentioning we're already set for what to if that happens.

I'll be the decker because I've arranged to get him computers and network access, and he'll be a shaman/gun runner because he practices native traditions and rituals and has on at least one occasion set me up with firearms. :)

Was recently talking about SR w another bud I play LOTRO with and noted that a SR MMORPG would be utter tits. Come to find there were some folks actually working on an incarnation of it but they didn't have the rights and MS growled at them. Too bad about the latest shooter, but hopefully it'll spark at least a little more interest in a wonderful game and setting.
